Dementia

Treatment for Dementia in Boca Raton, FL

Occasionally forgetting directions, instructions, and other information can easily be described as having a “senior moment” but if it happens often, it could be an early sign of dementia.

What Is Dementia?

Dementia is an umbrella term describing several different mental health and cognitive issues, including Alzheimer’s disease. Dementia causes healthy nerve cells to stop connecting with other brain cells, and these healthy cells begin to die. As the nerve cells die, signs and symptoms of dementia begin to develop.

Signs and Symptoms of Dementia

Dementia affects thinking, reasoning, and remembering. There are several signs and symptoms of dementia, including:

  • Short-term memory loss
  • Losing important items
  • Forgetting to pay bills
  • Difficulty with everyday activities like cooking
  • Forgetting about appointments
  • Forgetting directions and locations

A person with dementia may also experience personality changes including becoming aggressive combative, or withdrawn.

Diagnosis of Dementia

If you or someone you know is experiencing any of the signs and symptoms listed above, a dementia evaluation is recommended. There are several steps involved in the evaluation, including:

  • Performing a thorough physical examination to check for an underlying condition that might be causing dementia signs and symptoms
  • Recording a complete medical history, including a family history of physical or neurological issues
  • Performing neurological and cognitive testing, including balance assessment, testing reflexes, and evaluating sensory responses
  • Laboratory testing of blood and other body fluids to check for an imbalance that may be causing dementia signs and symptoms
  • Imaging studies, including CT, MRI, and PET scans to look for tumors and other issues that may be affecting the brain.

Treatment of Dementia

Dementia can’t be cured, but it can be managed using several types of therapy including medications to improve brain function, lifestyle, diet, exercise modifications, and other therapies.
